WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Practiced in Asian countries for thousands of years, the theory behind acupuncture is that a healthy human body provides balance, harmonious flow of natural, vital energy called Qi (“chee”). This energy flows through meridians, or energy pathways, in the human body. These pathways may be accessed through 350 acupuncture points on the body.  Acupuncture involves stimulation of the body at those specific points, most frequently using the technique of penetrating the skin with thin needles, followed by manipulation with the hands or electrical stimulation. The same points are sometimes pressed (acupressure) or warmed (moxibustion). When the energy balance is disturbed for various reasons, the flow becomes blocked at certain parts of the body and may cause pain, discomfort and/or illness. Finding those points and applying acupuncture often eases this pain and illness.

WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE USED?

Acupuncture needles are very thin and very safe. They are approximately the width of a human hair and are placed slightly below the outer layer of skin. Typically, there is little to no discomfort and you can barely feel the needle. The body feels relaxed and the goal is to have the flow of energy return to a harmonious state. Acupuncture has little to no side effects or doesn't use any harmful chemicals. An Acupuncture session lasts about 20-30 minutes. Most people appreciate this time to relax and promote their well being. Acupuncture needles are used only once. They are sterile and are disposed of properly after each use
